Baccarat online: Origins of the game

First appearing in Italy during the 14th century, baccarat was brought to France in the Napoleonic era. From there, baccarat began as a popular game played in private gaming rooms largely among players with high social status.

According to the widely accepted account for its origin, baccarat was invented by Felix Falguiere who was an avid gambler from Italy. The name of the game came from the Italian word baccarat which means zero. This is because all tens, jacks, kings and queens have a zero value in baccarat. Initially, Baccarat was played with Tarot cards.

When it rose to popularity in France, many variants of the game came about. The three-person game Baccarat Banque is the earliest form mentioned in the Album des Jeux by Charles Van-Tenac. Chemin de Fer was developed. It is a two-person, zero-sum game based on Baccarat Banque.

Later on, Baccarat Punto Banco gave way to a significant change in the development of modern baccarat. The bettor bets on whether the player’s hand or the banker’s hand wins. This variant turned into a house-banked game in Havana in the 1940s and is now the most popular form of modern baccarat.

Today, you can now play baccarat online thanks to advancements in tech. It is as simple as logging in on your preferred devices such as your desktop, tablet or smartphone to win large sums of money from this exhilarating online casino table game.

How to play baccarat: Rules, bet, payouts, and odds

Baccarat is a straightforward casino game that both first-time players and seasoned gamblers can easily pick up. In the most basic sense, it is a comparing card game played between two hands which are dealt to the player and the banker.

Each round of play (baccarat coup) can present one of the three possible outcomes you can bet on which are:

  • Player bet – in which the player has the higher score and therefore wins.
  • Banker bet – in which the banker has the higher score and therefore wins.

There are also side bets such as:

  • Tie Bet – where both the player’s and banker’s hands end with even scores.
  • Pair Bet – When the first two cards are dealt, the gameplay is brought to a standstill so the dealer can remove the losing bets from the table and pay the winning ones.
  • Dragon Bonus – It pays 30 to 1 when your hand wins by a large margin or you just have a natural win.
  • Dragon 7 or Panda 8 – Side bets apply mainly to EZ Baccarat that pays the 5% commission on winning Banker bets.

The object of the table game is to get a point total closest to 9. If the cards you have make a higher (double-digit) score, only the right digit is used. Card suits do not matter. Below are the values assigned to each card:

  • 10, J, Q, K = 0
  • 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 = face value
  • Aces = 1
  • Jokers = not used

The dealer is obliged to turn over one card at the start of each new shoe to manage the number of the cards that would be burned. When all bets are down, the dealer gives two cards to the player and two cards to the banker. The hand with the higher value wins.

A third card can be dealt if the player or the banker has a total of 8 or 9 and they both stand. If the player’s hand is 5 or less, he/she is supposed to hit. In case the total is more than 5, the player stands and vice versa. If the player stands, the banker hits granted the total score is 5 or less.

The player’s hand is always the first one to be acted upon. A natural is a hand of 8 or 9 which automatically wins against any banker’s hands except 8 or 9. The house edge on the player’s hand is 1.24% while the payout is 1:1.

On the other hand, the banker’s hand is considered to have a slight advantage over the player since it is dealt second. Be that as it may, it has a lower house edge of 1.06% but pays the same 1:1. Usually, there is a 5% commission on banker bets.

As for the tie bets, the payout is usually paid 8:1 or 9:1 while the house edge can significantly jump to 14.4% depending on the casino. If the hand ends in a tie, both the player and the banker will receive a refund of their bets.

Play baccarat online: Try different game variants

Throughout the years, baccarat came from a card game mainly played by high-ranking socialites to a table game you can play anywhere and anytime you want through online casinos. Due to this, baccarat branched off into different variations you can enjoy.

Chemin de Fer

This baccarat variant is the French version of the card game where the dealer sets out a stake. In Chemin de Fer, players compete against each other rather than playing against the dealer. The winning odds are in favour of the bank with a house edge no lower than 1%.

To match the stake of the dealer, the players are supposed to say Banco which means ‘go to the bank’. The player who does so will be the next banker or makes a wager smaller than the full stake required to continue the bet.

Players are given the chance to make wagers until the banker’s stake is matched. In case the banker’s total is exceeded, the dealer can refuse the bet. The cards are dealt then the player with the highest stake plays for his/her bettor’s group.

In case the total of their cards exceeds 9, the dealer will pay everyone’s stake. If the hand totals 8 or 9, they turn over the cards. However, the dealer collects the wagers if the total is lower.

Baccarat Banque

Baccarat Banque is also known as a deux tableau in French which means ‘two tables’. Before the start of the game, the role of the banker is auctioned. In this baccarat variant, the player is dealt two hands while the bank is dealt one hand.

Players have to choose whether to bet on their side of the table or bet on both player hands. Each player will hold the cards for his side so long as he wins or ties. If he loses, the hand is dealt to the player next following him. Players can’t bet on the dealer’s hand but they have the option of ‘going bank’ where if they win, they get the right to take the banking seat.

Baccarat Banque can be played even if only one player joins the table. One player is required to act as a dealer and banker for the entire shoe. The dealer can choose the player to his/her right or the player with the biggest wager to be a banker.

European Baccarat

As the name suggests, this baccarat variant is made popular in Europe. The player can stand or draw on 5 in this game. Meanwhile, the banker can decide whether to request a third card or not.

The Banker’s hand is backed by the casino. Moreover, if the player is willing to cover the banker’s bet, he/she must call out banco. This means the other players no longer have the chance to make bets during that round.

Punto Banco

This baccarat variant is the closest to the mechanics of Chemin de Fer. Punto Banco can be distinguished when the game action unfolds following an established set of rules with no optional plays.

It can be run by one dealer and can host up to 12 players at a time. Players place wagers on the player or on the bank before the cards are dealt. The player whose hand has a total closest to nine is declared the winner.

Super 6 or Punto 2000

Instead of 95%, Super 6 or Punto 200 is where even money is paid on winning banker bets, except when the banker wins with 6 which pays only 50% of the bet. The house edge of a banker bet in this baccarat variant is 1.46%. This is equal to raising the commission by 17.45% to 5.87%.

Moreover, the banker wins with a 6 about 5 times in every eight-deck shoe. This game is played in casinos for its speed since it partly takes away the time-consuming process of calculating and collecting the commission on winning banker bets.

EZ Baccarat

Originating in 2004, this baccarat variant is one of the most recent versions of the game. Even money is paid on both winning banker or player bets but not when the banker wins with a total of 7 after the third card is drawn. This is because it results in a push on banker bets.

EZ Baccarat has two additional options. One is the Dragon 7 which is a specific bet of a winning three-card 7 on the banker side. It pays 40-to-1 instead of pushing. The other one is Panda 8 where a bet of a winning three-card 8 on the player side pays 25-to-1.

Mini Baccarat

Mini Baccarat is literally a smaller version of the game in a more modest setting. This means the table is only staffed by a single dealer and can host up to seven players. Cards are dealt by a dealer directly from a standard shoe. The rules of this variant are no different from the customs of the standard baccarat version.

Continue going with the banker bet until it loses.

If you notice that the Banker goes on a streak from your first bet, it is a smart move to keep on betting it. Capitalize on streaks and the bet that seem to have a better chance for a streak such as a banker’s hand. Just be sure to keep in mind the house edge on every bet you make.

Wait for one more outcome after a banker loss.

If you finally lose with a banker’s bet, you should not immediately jump to another bet. Wait for the next outcome before you decide on what you should bet on. Just remember that if the next outcome is a tie, neither the banker nor the player loses.

Learn to manage your money.
